Every October, we’re reminded of something we all mean to do—but often don’t get around to: planning for the future.
In the U.S., it’s called National Estate Planning Awareness Week, recognized the third full week of October (this year, October 20–26, 2025) through U.S. House Resolution 1499, first introduced in 2008.
The goal is simple: to raise awareness about why estate planning matters and to encourage more Americans to take that all-important first step towards financial wellness and to help the public understand the value of an estate plan for financial wellness and to encourage everyone to create or update their plans
For families here in Fort Lauderdale and across Florida, it’s a perfect time to reflect on what truly matters—and to turn good intentions into action.
Why So Many People Put It Off
You’re not alone if estate planning has been on your to-do list for years. Many people delay it for reasons that feel valid at the time:
- “I’m not old enough to need a will.”
- “I don’t own much, so what’s the point?”
- “I’ll get to it when life slows down.”
And then there are the more creative reasons we tell ourselves:
- “Talking about it might jinx me.”
- “If I write a will, it means I’m expecting something bad to happen.”
- “I’ll wait until my kids are older… or my house is paid off… or next year.”
These hesitations are deeply human—but they’re also based on myths. Estate planning doesn’t summon bad luck any more than buying car insurance causes an accident. It’s a smart, loving way to care for your family’s future.
Estate Planning Is About Care, Not Control
It’s easy to think of estate planning as a legal or financial exercise, but at its core, it’s about care and consideration.
It means:
- Making sure your loved ones are supported and informed.
- Reducing stress and confusion for your family later on.
- Ensuring your values and wishes are honored.
An estate plan can include simple tools—a will, power of attorney, or healthcare directive—that bring peace of mind long before they’re ever needed.
How to Move Past the Hesitation
Estate planning doesn’t have to be intimidating. Here are a few ways to make it approachable:
- Start with a conversation.
Talk with your spouse, partner, or family about your priorities. Most people find that once the topic is opened, it becomes easier to continue. - Take it one step at a time.
You don’t have to finish everything in one sitting. Starting small is still progress. - Ask for guidance.
A knowledgeable estate planning attorney can help you understand your options and translate your wishes into clear, legally sound documents. - Review as life changes.
Your plan should grow with you—adjusting after milestones like marriage, retirement, or a move to Florida.
Awareness Is the First Step
That’s what National Estate Planning Awareness Week is really about—encouragement, not alarm.
It’s a reminder that estate planning is less about preparing for the end, and more about making life easier for the people you love.
Planning ahead gives you the freedom to focus on living fully, knowing that the details are taken care of.
